Maintaining your skates is extremely important, not only to ensure the long life of your skates but for a smooth, safe ride. Skates need routine cleaning and maintenance and we have put together a guide to help you keep your skates in tip condition.

Clean Your Skates Regularly

With a damp cloth clean away the dirt accumulating on the outside of the bearings. Gently dig out any embedded dirt.

Change the Wheels

Check the wheels for wear and replace when the inside edges have a shaved off look or when you can hardly read the writing on the sides of the wheels.

Wheel Nuts

Every three or four months check the wheel nuts. If you skate a lot you should check them more often. Tighten with a half inch wrench just enough that they have no play but not tight enough to prevent the wheels rolling smoothly.

Toe Stoppers

Roller skates have two types of stoppers, Carrera types that are adjustable and non adjustable types. The non adjustable types need to be checked weekly as they work lose from the vibrations caused by stopping frequently. If they are loose use a screwdriver to tighten them as tight as possible.

Adjustable types of toe stoppers do not become loose from vibrations so need much less frequent checks. Once every six months should be enough. If they need adjusting loosen the nut on the base of the stopper and use your hand to adjust the height.

Trucks

Trucks can be adjusted for flexibility and control. The looser they are the more flexible, but control is harder, especially when skating fast. If the trucks are tighter flexibility is reduced but control is easier. It is a matter of preference and skating style so experiment until the amount of flexibility suits your style.

Inverted kingpins are tightened with a wrench and do not have a locking nut. Standard kingpins have a locking nut which must first be loosened with a wrench. The king pin is then turned to adjust the tension. After adjusting the trucks make sure that the locking nut is re-tightened.

Adjusting the Plates

The plates are adjustable on some skates, for instance Soul Train and Blue Love makes. Independent adjustments of the trucks can then be made. This is particularly useful for artistic dancing and freestyle skating. For tight turns and spins a narrower setting is used. For most recreational skating a wider setting will be more appropriate and this will be the setting of most newly purchased skates. Experiment with the width of the trucks if you have adjustable ones by making small changes and testing the feel and control.

They are adjusted by loosening the locking nut on the base of the truck with a wrench then adjusting the spacing by moving the whole assembly on its track. The locking nut must be securely tightened after adjusting and checked monthly to make sure it has not worked loose.

When to Change the Bearings

After about a year, or six months if you skate a lot, the bearings will need to be changed. When the bearings start to make a lot of noise and skating is no longer smooth you will know it is time for them to be changed. The bearings ensure that the skates run smoothly. On each wheel a casing holds the ball bearings and they are damaged by sand or dirt or when being used when the ground is wet. Bearings are readily available and can be easily changed. The standard size is 8mm but check the size of your skates before you purchase.

How to Change the Bearings

1. Using a wrench remove the axle and pull out the front wheel
2. Pop off the bearings from both sides of the wheel.
3. Place the new bearings onto the wheel and replace the wheel in the frame.
4. Re-tighten the axle with the wrench. For aluminium spacers tighten the bolts as much as possible. For plastic spacers tighten as much as possible then slightly loosen.
5. Check that the wheels can spin freely. If necessary loosen the axle bolts slightly. Tighten the bolts more if wobbling occurs.
6. Repeat the steps for the back wheels.

Clean and maintain your roller skates for enjoyable and trouble free skating!

Both adults and children enjoy go kart racing or kart racing as most people prefer to call it. Children from eight years old can enjoy this sport which is regulated by the the Motor Sports association in Europe where organizations such as the National Schools Karting Association organize meetings. in the US kart racing is regulated by a variety of organisations such the World Karting Association, Karter’s of America and the International Racing association.

The Australian Karting Association organizes karting events in Australia.
Karters are divided into classes which usually start at 8 years old and are in 3 year age divisions until a senior class at about 16 years old.

Karts used in racing are called superkarts and can reach more than 160mph. A superkart can accelerate from standing to 60mph in about 3 secs.

The World Karting Association organizes kart racing at more than 120 tracks throughout the nation. The largest body regulating karting in the US, it was established in 1971 and is also one of the largest bodies for sanctioning kart racing in the world.

Kart racing has grown in popularity since the very beginning in the 1950’s when karters used parking lots for their racing circuits. It grew rapidly into a much more organized sport as purpose built circuits were built until today when over 100,000 people in the US enjoy this recreational activity. The Association of British Kart Clubs In Britain, regulated by the MTA consists of over thirty associations which each hold meetings regularly.

Some Different Types of Kart Racing

Sprint kart racing uses specially built circuits of between 400 and 1600 metres. A typical race lasts about 14 minutes with the emphasis on overtaking and speed. Sprint races are usually short races with only a few laps that qualify for a final. Championships held by the FIA and the Karting World Championship are sprint races.

Endurance races are for long periods, sometimes up to 24 hours with drivers taking turns. Emphasis is on pit strategy and reliability rather than speed. One of the most famous endurance races takes place on th kart circuit in France at Le Mans owned by Alain Prost, the Formula 1 racing driver. In this 24 hour race past winners have been Toro Rosso, a Formula 1 driver and S?bastien Bourdais, a Car Champ winner. Endurance races usually take place on one mile to four mile circuits.

In the US endurance racing is called Enduro and takes place on circuits from between 1 1/2 miles to 4 miles long. races are typically 30 to 45 minutes without any pit stops.

Speedway races take place on clay or asphalt tracks that are one sixth to one quarter miles long. Asymetric tracks are usually used with four left turns and two straight lengths. Because of the left turns karts with off set chassis have been specially developed for these types of tracks. Races consist of four to twenty laps.

Formats Used for kart Racing

The International Kart Federation uses heat races which consist of heats of two laps, the winners entering the final which is usually twenty laps.

The World Karting Association uses timed laps where karters compete in groups for the fastest lap time. A twenty lap final is then the featured event.

Miles of open Mediterranean Sea and a year-round tropical climate are just a few reasons sailing is so popular in the Balearic Islands. Mallorca hosts several sailing competitions throughout the year.

Some of the most popular regattas in the world take place in the Mediterranean. The 49er European Championship Madrid 2016 is held each March in Palma de Mallorca at Club Nautic S’Arenal. The Bay of Palma is very large and can accommodate many of the sailors and their vessels. Mallorca offers mooring for up to 10,000 yachts. Palma de Mallorca, the 12th largest urban area of Spain, is also host to the King’s Cup and several other regattas.

The 25th Annual King’s Cup

Also known as Copa Del Rey, the King’s Cup is one of the most popular and prestigious yachting competitions. In August 2007, about 140 yachtsmen and women hit the waters for the event. The 2008 King’s Cup marks the 25th anniversary of the highly anticipated regatta. The competition showcases two races each day for seven days with prizes awarded in each event.

Traditionally, the King of Spain hosts the competition and awards prizes to the winners of each class. For the 2008 King’s Cup, King Juan Carlos of Spain and his son Prince Felipe will join the race together. The king and prince team will compete with the most renowned yachtsmen and women in the world for the 25th Annual King’s Cup.

4th World University Sailing Championship

Mallorca’s temperate climate allows for early and late-season sailing competitions. The 4th World University Sailing Championship will be held in Palma de Mallorca from September 22 through September 27, 2008. Contenders must meet minimum qualifications. Two events make up the race; Individual Championship and Team Racing Championship.

Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Regatta

Quite possibly the regatta with the highest competition level, the Trofeo Sar Princess Sofia takes place each year around Easter. More than a thousand sailboats and nearly two-thousand competitors take to the waters in the Bay of Palma. Sailing enthusiasts as well as Olympic hopefuls enjoy the scope of the competition. The 2008 competition allowed some countries to better select which team would represent them in the 2008 Olympics. The Olympic Sailing Competition will be held on August 21, 2008 in Qingdao, Beijing.

Attending a Sailing Competition

Each competition follows its own set of rules set by the club or organization presenting the competition. The sheer number of sailing competitions held throughout the year makes it relatively easy for tourists to witness at least one competition while enjoying their island holiday. Most competitions are followed by open celebrations by the winning parties. More information can be obtained from your travel agent or any number of specialist websites promoting sailing in Mallorca.

Sailing in Mallorca and the Mediterranean Sea

Sailing in the Mediterranean waters surrounding Mallorca isn’t restricted to competitions and races. The island is home to 41 marinas and 30 boating clubs. Yachts and sailboats can be chartered or rented at many of the island’s marinas. Pedal boats and other watercraft are also available for rent. At any given time during the year, the horizon is dotted with sailboats, yachts and other watercraft.

The position of the Bay of Palma and the popularity of the city help fuel the love of sailing. Tourists often enjoy the cultural events as well as watching the boaters from the pier or the beaches. Boat rides and tours are available at many locally owned business locations in the city. The Spanish Royal Family enjoys holidays each summer in Mallorca. This year, they’re adding the thrill of competition to their holiday time.

Wild duck hunters have been using duck decoys to help them catch more of these small creatures for many years with noticeable success. In our days, these duck decoys are even more popular among collectors. The main purpose of these decoys is to attract other animals into the rifle scope?s range so that the hunter can take efficient shots. An interesting history fact is that in North America, these wild duck decoys have been used for more than two thousand years.

If somebody wants to find the oldest decoys in the world, the best place to look is at the Smithsonian Museum in the United States where they have the oldest decoys found in not only the United States, but also Canada and other North American areas. The Native Americans manufactured these decoys by hand using wood that they carved into or they used straw in order to make the wild duck shape. Several decoys that have been found are more complex than others, with more details and various colors. The more complex the decoys are, the higher the value will be for hunters and collectors.

Wild duck decoys from 1880s to 1940s had a larger amount of complexity and detail. As an example, the eyes were made of glass while the bodies were weighted for the ideal amount of buoyancy. Although the materials used for producing wild duck decoys have changed over the years, the concept of the body style hasn?t changed one bit. The modern decoys are just as efficient as the ancient versions.

Finding wild duck decoys for hunting purposes shouldn?t be a very difficult thing to do as there are many online auction shops over the Internet. Be sure that you check the seller?s credentials before making such a purchase because if you want to purchase an antique decoy, it could actually turn out to be a cheap reproduction. Flea markets and thrift shops are a good place to find wild duck decoys.

Once you have purchased the right wild duck decoy for your hunting style you must know that if you plan on hunting in wetland areas and you want to ensure that the birds coming your way will fly past your decoy you must set up your duck upwind your hunting position. If you don?t do this, there is a high probability that the ducks will rest on the outer edges thus limit your opportunities for an efficient shot. In order to make sure that the wild ducks won?t catch on to your trick, it is advisable to group your decoys according to their species. This is because the birds typically tend to stay within their own groups when they rest.

All things considered, wild duck decoys are essential for duck hunters and are also well sought after by collectors. Whether you are using them for hunting purposes or you just want them for your personal collection, you need to purchase a wide variety of colors and styles because you know what they say: you don?t want to have all of your ducks in one row so choose wisely.

Razvan Marian Jr. is the manager of www.wildduckhuntinginfo.com where hunters can find useful duck hunting information as well as some of the most efficient duck hunting dogs .

One might think that keeping the jersey they wore in high school in the closet is the best way to maintain it. I would have to say they are sorely mistaken. That football jersey you wore during the championship game, the uniform donned for your first pee-wee league game, or even the jersey you wore when your favorite team won a championship. These items are not just articles of clothing, they embody pieces of personal history and deserve to be treated as such.

The best way known to maintain a jersey is to have it framed. Framing a jersey serves two purposes. The first purpose is that framing a jersey maintains it in its current state and protects it from any future damage. Being the owner of many jerseys, some framed and some not, the damage a jersey can sustain by just being hung on a hanger compared to one framed and hung on a wall is amazing. Over time the threads and fabrics in the shoulders will stretch and weaken. Not to mention the damage that can be caused by constantly wearing, washing, and drying of a jersey. The other reason to frame a jersey is so that it can be displayed in all of its glory above the mantle or beside that 52 inch plasma TV we all want adorning our wall. Just imagine that jersey hanging on the wall while watching a championship game on the big screen. Reliving your glory days while at the same time sharing those memories with family and friends. In all honesty how can a jersey stuffed in a drawer somewhere even compare.

The assumption that most people make is that framing a jersey is as simple as slapping it in a frame, covering it in glass and tossing it on the wall. That could not be farther from the truth. Framing a jersey properly is a talent best left to professionals. Why would a person have it any other way? Would you really want to risk damaging that one of a kind jersey autographed by a childhood hero? Beyond the possible damage that could be inflicted upon the jersey, a professionally framed jersey is a work of art that any self respecting sports fan can be proud of.

Although if you do go the route of do it yourself framing there are a few things to remember. Determine how much of the jersey you want to display and measure the matting board, foam core backing and frame accordingly. Make sure that you tightly secure the jersey to the matting board either by sewing it or pinning it. Finally I would suggest using Plexiglas instead of glass because glass can shatter and damage your jersey.

I am not suggesting that all jerseys should be framed. That one that my wife wears while cleaning the house is definitely not on the list of jerseys I would frame. On the other hand there are those that deserve nothing less. Why leave them in the shadows of a dresser or a closet only to fade slowly from memory until no longer do they inspire us or remind us of those moment we are most proud of.
